FAQ for Volunteers

Who can join the fire department? Anyone! If you live within reasonable distance of the fire hall and are physically able to perform firefighting or operational support duties you may join. We suggest that you check with your physician about your physical condition and limitations. Firefighting is rigorous work, but operational support involves driving trucks, operating machinery, vehicle maintenance and other duties according to members' physical capabilities.

 

What qualifications does one have to have to join? All firefighters in our department must take the FireFighter I and II courses and pass the final exam and practical. Operational support individuals will receive training on the apparatus that they will use through the department. Operational support members driving fire trucks must pass the state mandated emergency driver's training offered locally. All members of the department should receive a physical and discuss any physical limitations with their physician.

 

Where can I get trained to be a firefighter? State mandated firefighter training is offered within the Copper Country on a scheduled basis. The Fire Department coordinates enrollment and also provides in-house training.

 

Are there any other positions in the fire department other than a firefighter? Other positions in the fire department include operational support positions, Safety Officer, Medical First Responder, fundraising and administrative support.

 

Do I have to pay anything to join the department? There is no cost to joining the fire department, although you may need to transport yourself to training. All of your Personal Protective Equipment is provided by the department.

 

What is a Medical First Responder? A medical first responder (MFR) is someone who has been certified to treat medical emergencies and has completed pre-hospital care training. MFRs are the first level of emergency medical care recognized by the state.

 

Does the fire department have Medical First Responders (MFR’s)? The department currently has a trained medical responder team and new members are always welcome.

 

How does one become a Medical First Responder? Students applying for Medical First Responder program entry must have: a High School Diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license, and no felony convictions. The candidate must complete and pass a special course of study, receiving a certificate of course completion. A National Registry exam application, exam reservation form, and necessary information for licensure will be issued to those successfully completing all components of the MFR course.

 

Does a Medical First Responder have to be a firefighter? No, a Medical First Responder does not need firefighter training, but will be welcomed at the fire scene to assist with victims and firefighter rehabilitation.

 

How else can I support the department? Join the Gay Fire Department Auxiliary! The Auxiliary holds a biweekly Bazaar and Sale at the Community Hall during the summer. They meet on Mondays, 10-noon and 6:00 to 8:00 from mid-May to September. If that isn’t appealing, you can purchase apparel through our online gift shop or donate to the department directly. Also, help to support the Auxiliary with your donation of gently used household items, clothing, and unique paraphernalia on Mondays throughout the summer.
